Philosophy Football Fly to Zurich for international tournament commemorating May 68 on the eve of Euro 2008.

Philosophy Football FC, the club sponsored by those ‘sporting outfitters of intellectual distinction’, whose shirts are adorned with the words of Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Bill Shankly, will be playing in a four team tournament in Zurich this Saturday (31 May) on the eve of Euro 2008. The ‘International Football Friendship Tournament’ brings together teams from 4 countries; in addition to Philosophy Football, these are Balon Mundial, the multi-national team of immigrants based in Turin, FSV Fijnaart from Rotterdam and FC Levante Wibi, the host club from Zurich. The match will be followed by dinner and a cabaret event involving the players of the teams which count several musicians, writers, comedians and poets in their squads.

The idea for the tournament is to celebrate the spirit of participation and protest of May 68 as a way of looking forward to a peaceful European championship which starts a week later in the same city. Philosophy Football will be playing in a shirt commemorating the Situationists, whose famous slogan ‘Be Realistic. Demand the Impossible’ was painted on the walls of Paris during the student rebellions. According to Philosophy Football manager Geoff Andrews, the tournament will be a ‘great opportunity to celebrate the simple pleasures of the beautiful game. Like 1968, we want to talk about participation and protest. Football is the people’s game which uses ‘the power of imagination’, but it is in danger of being taken over by big corporate interests. We need to remember how football can bring people together’.
